Objectives
This course aims to acquaint students with the fundamental concepts of Thermodynamics and apply them to the main engine cycles and refrigeration, as well as to psychrometrics and combustion.
Learning Outcomes: students should know how to analyse energy transformers cycles, psychrometric processes and combustion.
First week: acquaintance and understanding of important parameters in the analyse of the main thermodynamic cycles;
Rest of the semester: acquaintance with the energy transformers cycles and their performance. A psychrometric and combustion approach.
Program
Introduction
Efficiency, work ratio and specific consumption of steam/gas
Carnot cycle: thermodynamic analysis and variable analysis;
Rankine cycle: thermodynamic analysis and variable analysis
Joule-Breyton cycle: thermodynamic analysis and variable analysis
Otto, Diesel and Sabathié cycle: thermodynamic analysis and variable analysis; mean effective pressure;
Refrigeration cycles: thermodynamic analysis and variable analysis; refrigeration fluids;
Gas mixtures: mass, molar and volume fraction; Dalton’s, Gibb Daltons’ and Amagat’s law by the second law of thermodynamics in mixture processes;
Psychrometric: absolute and relative humidity, dew point; application of thermodynamics fundamental laws to psychrometric processes;
Combustion: stoichiometric combustion; excess air; fume analysis; enthalpy of formation; adiabatic flame temperature

Theoretical exam + Practical exam
Observations
For the final examination students can only take with them the tables of thermodinamic properties of substances, as well as four pages A4 written with information that the students think is necessary.
