Objectives

To grasp the fundamentals of digital modulations and spread spectrum techniques.
In the end of the semester the student should, at least, be able to understand the operation of modulation-based communication systems, choose adequate detection methods and compute error probabilities. The student should then also be familiar with direct sequence and frequency hopping spread spectrum techniques and be knowledgeable enough about the properties of the most common spreading codes.

Program

Topic 1: Digital modulations
Nonbinary digital modulations (MPSK, MFSK and QAM); transmitters and receivers; symbol and bit error probabilities.
Minimum shift-keying (MSK) and GMSK.
Noncoherent detection of PSK and FSK signals; DPSK.
Spectral efficiency.
Synchronization techniques: carrier phase recovery and timing recovery.
Topic 2: Spread Spectrum
Introduction and generic considerations; spread spectrum techniques: direct sequence (DS) and frequency hopping (FH); effects of jamming; Walsh, Barker and pseudo-random sequences (PN, Gold and Kasami sequences); multiple access (CDMA).

Teaching methods and learning activities

- theory is presented in lecture classes;
- exercise solving and interaction with the teacher occur in theoretical-practical classes; students will be given a set of exercises to be solved in class and at home.
- Matlab/Simulink simulation work will be developed in 2-hour lab classes.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

Description Type Time (hours) Weight (%) End date
Subject Classes Participação presencial 56,00
Exams Exame 3,00 2008-06-04
Lab work preparation Trabalho escrito 20,00
Total: - 0,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Description Type Time (hours) End date
Estudo autónomo 55 2008-05-30
Exam preparation Estudo autónomo 26 2008-06-04
Total: 81,00

Eligibility for exams

Not to be absent more than the allowed number of times stated in "Normas de Avaliação".

Calculation formula of final grade

CF=0,35 x (T1+T2) + 0,3xAD

CF - final grade
T1 and T2 - test grade
AD - distributed evaluation grade on the four (out of five) best lab works.
Distributed evaluation is accomplished during Lab Classes and is based on the student's performance on Lab work and reports.
To pass the course the average test grade may not be lower than 35% of total grade (7,0 in 20).

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Oral or written exam. Lab grade is not taken into consideration. The "Época de Conclusão de Curso" is included in this Special Evaluation.

Classification improvement

Two tests and latest year's lab grade (see "Final Classification" above for the weights).

Observations

The following students are not required to attend class: military, working or equivalent students and those who have attained frequency in the preceding academic year.
