Objectives
This course aims to develop students’ skills on:
1. the acquisition and demonstration of advanced knowledge on the constitution and performance of protection and electrical energy systems (CDIO Syllabus: 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 2.1, 2.3);
2. the treatment, validation and interpretation of results obtained in practical assignments, namely in the parameterization and programming of digital relays (CDIO Syllabus: 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.3);
3. autonomous work and bibliography research (CDIO Syllabus: 2.4 and 3.3);
4. planning and developing a team work (CDIO Syllabus: 2.4 and 3.1);
5. report writing;
6. the understanding of external, enterprise and commercial contexts in which this sector is incorporated (CDIO Syllabus: 4.1 and 4.2);
7. setting objectives and project management (CDIO Syllabus: 4.3 and 4.6)
Program
Objectives of the protection and control systems. Integrated systems of control, monitoring and measurement. Characteristics of relays. Protection systems. Distance relays. Relays’ typical curves. Coordination of protection systems. Application of the distance relays in line protection. Bus protection systems. Protection of alternating current generators, AC machines, transformers, condensers and alternating current generators/transformers. Type 2 protection. Eligibility for exams
Assessment components:
- class preparation;
- report about testing and relay programming;
- final exam
If there are not many students enrolled in the course, the final exam can be replaced by a highly demanding assignment, which will cover all the themes of the course. This assignment is to be done during the semester.
Students will be admitted to exams if they:
- do not exceed more classes than allowed;
- achieve a minimum mark of 50% in the preparation of classes;
- achieve a minimum mark of 50% in testing and relay programming assignment.
All these components assess CDIO Syllabus.
Calculation formula of final grade
Class preparation- 2 values
Theoretical-practical assignments, reports, practical tests and relay programming- 5 values
Final Exam- 13 values; Students have to reach a minimum mark of 8
Examinations or Special Assignments
Final exam, written report about testing and relay programming and class preparation
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
Exam.
Classification improvement
Students can meet professors between 8 am and 4 pm in their offices, as long as they are not giving a class.
Students can schedule a meeting by sending an e-mail.
