Theory of vibration; single-degree-of-freedom systems; free and forced vibration response, with and without damping; multi-degree-of-freedom systems; modal analysis; response spectra and power spectra. Basic seismic engineering concepts; definition of seismic action; accelerograms; response and power spectra; generation of artificial accelerograms; influence of local conditions; maps of seismic risk; selection of design earthquakes. Dynamic properties of soils; laboratory and field tests. Dynamic response of soil masses; horizontal soil layers; viscoelastic continuum models; transfer function; modal analysis; simplified nonlinear models; discrete models; a note on soil-structure interaction. Soil liquefaction; reports of accidents; evaluation of the liquefaction potential; settlement prediction for saturated sands; liquefaction models.
