Objectives

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to scientific research, so that they are able to write their dissertations. Research principles and techniques are discussed, and students’ projects are monitored as they evolve. Ultimately, the purpose of the course is to facilitate the writing of a master dissertation, projet or internship report.

Learning outcomes and competences

By the end of the process (final report) the student is expected to have:

  • Clearly identified the research question and discussed the scientific gap that the research intends to fill;
  • Carried out a competent and complete literature review in the relevant area of research;
  • Identified and justified, under the light of the literature and in coherence with the research question, the research methodology (research strategy; data collection and techniques of analysis);
  • Developed a realistic timeline for the research/internship project.

  • One-to-one working sessions between students and their supervisors, as well as between students and the team of lecturers of the course.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Trabalho escrito 75,00
Apresentação/discussão de um trabalho científico 25,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Apresentação/discussão de um trabalho científico 0,50
Estudo autónomo 18,00
Frequência das aulas 24,00
Trabalho de investigação 160,00
Total: 202,50

Eligibility for exams

Evaluation is ongoing and without final exam.

The absence, even if justified, to the presentation sessions will result in a grade=0 at that moment of evaluation.

Non-justified, ipsis verbis, or highly similar transcriptions between reports and other sources (to be identified through a specialized software) will result in a grade=0 at that moment of evaluation.

Mobility out: Students will present, via Zoom, on the same schedule of the session.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final grade (FG) is calculated as follows:

FG = 0.05*Art + 0.05*WR1 + 0.30*WR2 + 0.10*PWR2 + 0.40*WR3 + 0.10*PWR3

Where: Art - Presentation of article; WR - Written report; PWR - Oral presentation of the written report.

This course has no final exam.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

NA

Classification improvement

Non aplicable.
Given the specificity of the curricular unit, there is no evaluation by final exam nor the possibility of improving the final grade.
