Objectives

The course aims to provide additional practical and applied knowledge in Finance, through the participation in seminars led by experts from corporate, academia, and institutions.

The seminar series will address different topics, focusing on current challenges, recent issues, and future perspectives in finance and other areas of knowledge with particular interest for future professionals.


Through the presentation of real-life cases by guest speakers, the students will develop the skills involved in characterizing complex problems in a multidisciplinary context, in evaluating the outcomes yielded, and in communicating their analysis and conclusions.

Learning outcomes:

  • Use the knowledge acquired in the program to characterize complex problems, evaluate the outputs yielded, and to communicate the analysis and conclusions on the real-life cases presented in each seminar
  • Analyse critically the current issues and challenges faced by the world of Finance.
  • Develop a global and systematized thinking about the impacts of cross-cutting challenges for Finance professionals
  • Envision the solutions for the future, presented by key market players, in this era of constant change.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Activities:

  • The semester includes a set of mandatory seminars (selected by the professor responsible for the course) and a second set of additional sessions of free selection by students.
  • In each session, there is a presentation of real cases and debate (Q&A).
  • Seminars require student participation through questions put to speakers at the end of each session.
  • The first session will be with the teacher responsible for the course, who will explain in detail how it works.

 

Learning and Assessment:

  • Oral participation in seminars - Q&A (individual evaluation)
  • Short report on a specific seminar selected by the professor responsible for the course (individual evaluation)
  • Group report on a seminar selected by the students (group evaluation) + Presentation of the report in video format (group evaluation + individual evaluation).

Eligibility for exams


  • Minimum grade: 10 (obtained according to the calculation formula below)

  • Attend at all seminars classified as mandatory by the professor responsible for the course.

  • Delivery of all assessment elements (reports + Q&A + presentation)

  • Attend a minimum of 11 seminars (including those defined as mandatory)

  • Share a certain minimum number of questions in specific seminars defined by the professor responsible for the course (this information is shared in detail on the Moodle page).

Calculation formula of final grade

The formula for calculating the final classification is detailed on the course page in Moodle and follows the following weighting criteria:

1) Participation in seminars: 20%

  • Attendance (individual): 10%
  • Oral participation (individual): 10%


2) Reports: 80%

  • Short report (individual): 15%
  • Group report: 45%
  • Video Presentation of the group report (individual + group): 20%

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

  • Students should prepare for each Seminar in advance as sessions will have a discussion period.
  • In the individual report, students must systematize the relevant information about the practical cases shared in the seminar, the ideas discussed in the session, and the questions and answers they find most interesting.
  • In the group report, students must show a critical sense, the ability to integrate practical knowledge and professional practices with the subjects and theories learned. Innovative approaches will be appreciated. Unlike the individual report, this group report should explore information beyond what was shared at the seminar.
  • Reports and video must be submitted in Moodle
