The curricular unit aims to analyse real economic problems, preferably proposed by invited professionals / specialists in the field, using specific methodologies and techniques and real data appropriate to address these problems in a team-work environment.
By the end of this course students should be able to analyse and make decisions regarding real economic problems, namely:
(i) identify the problem;
(ii) critically discuss the economic problem, using appropriate empirical methodologies and data;
(iii) present appropriate theoretical and empirical economic arguments for decision making in the context of the proposed economic problem.
By the end of this course students should also have developed team-work skills, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to learn independently and to plan their actions.
The syllabus of the course is adapted to the themes selected in each academic year within an area of Applied Economics, but always related to the list of course units of the semester or previous semesters. The curricular unit addresses the contents of the other curricular units, promoting their integration through group work on transdisciplinary economic themes.
The bibliography will be appropriate to the topics covered and recommended by the lecturers and guest speakers.
The curricular unit uses two complementary teaching methodologies: exhibition sessions and tutorial sessions.
The exhibition sessions aim to present the economic problem and the methodologies and techniques appropriate to address it.
Tutorial sessions provide personal advice to groups which permits challenging students more effectively to develop their critical reasoning and to bring the knowledge and techniques used in different courses to solve real and complex problems and make informed decisions.

Final classification = 0.15*A+0.25*B+0.20*C+0.40*D
A: Test
B: Participation in class
C: Intermediate reports
D: Final report
For a working student who does not meet the class attendance requirement, final grade is computed as follows:
Final classification = 0.20*A+0.10*B+0.25*C+0.45*D
A: Test
B: Oral presentation
C: Intermediate reports
D: Final report
Students in this situation may also be asked to carry out an extra oral discussion, with the aim of demonstrating that they have the required knowledge and skills.
