Objectives

The course provides students with a set of specific economic methods that enables them to understand the health system in general, and, in particular, the operation of health care providers. The course also provides an introduction to management models of healthcare providers.

Learning outcomes and competences

The student will be able to:
1. Identify the determinants of the supply and the demand for healthcare;
2. Identify different types of state intervention in health care systems;
3. Compare other health systems with the portuguese system;
4. Use economic concepts and models to predict the behaviour of several healthcare actors;
5. to compare different payment modalities to providers and their problems;
6. Identify different methods of economic evaluation in health care and interpret the results of an economic evaluation study

Teaching methods and learning activities

Lectures with practical applications, in which the concepts and models of economic analysis are presented and examples and cases are discussed. Classes are conducted in order to maximize the exchange of ideas.

Eligibility for exams

Evaluation may be distributed or by final exam. The distributed evaluation consists of a optional individual or group work and two tests, with the second to be held on the day of the final exam.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final classification of the distributed evaluation corresponds to the average of the marks obtained in the two tests (70%) and the individual or group work (30%).
