Objectives

“The purpose of human resource management is to improve the productive contribution of people to the organization in an ethical and socially responsible way”. In Werther, W. & Davis, K. (1993). Human resources and personnel management. NY: McGraw-Hill Book Co., 4th edition, p. 10.

This course is designed to be an introduction to the field of Human Resource Management, target to undergraduate management students. It discusses the meaning of "Human Resource Management" and highligths HR policies, programs, and practices aimed to influence organizations’ success.

Learning outcomes and competences

After completing this program, students will:

  • Understand and explain what are the purposes of Human Resource Management, how had it evolved and how can HRM enhance organizational excellence.
  • Be able to explain the core human resource processes, such as: HR planning, recruitment, selection and integration, training and development, performance appraisal and compensation
  • Understand how globalization and change are affecting the way organizations manage people, which include the effects of downsizing.
  • Recognize and identify the ethical dilemmas related to HRM in organizations
  • Recognize and consider the perspectives of different stakeholders

Teaching methods and learning activities

The course takes place in 13 weeks with onsite and distance learning.
The course incorporates a variety of teaching and learning methods - short lectures, readings, discussions, experiential exercises, cases, and movies. Students are expected to demonstrate mastery of the material through class participation, group discussions and individual written assignments, and tests.

Besides the interactions during classes, all students are expected to use Email as a daily communication tool. Therefore, please assure your teacher knows and has your correct email address.

Eligibility for exams

Continuous Assessment

To enroll in the continuous assessment regime, the student is required to complete the group work. This modality is especially recommended for students who intend to actively participate in the course by attending at least 75% of the scheduled face-to-face classes. Frequency of classes is counted in the class in which the student is enrolled.

 


Continuous Assessment with final exam

Group Work - To be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 members of the same class. Detailed instructions are provided in class and in a specific document available at Sigarra. This work must be delivered in Moodle, in MSWord version, by the end of the last day of classes of the curricular unit. There will be a presentation session of the works foreseen for the 1st class of weeks IX and X, aimed at training oral communication skills and providing feedback on the content of the work that allow for improvement. Each group will have to prepare a 5-minute presentation with the main contents and / or questions.


 


Test - The test will coincide with the Final Exam – normal (January 15th at 8:30 am).


 


 


 


Final Exam Modality


Exam to be carried out according to the official calendar. The exam will contain essay and analysis questions, according to the theoretical perspectives addressed. Students that fail continuous assessment or final exam evaluation or with approval, but who want to improve the final classification, may enroll in the resit Exam.

Calculation formula of final grade

Continuous assessment 

  • Group Work - 40% (Written Report)
  • Test - 60%

Minimum grade in the test and in the group work: 7 points out of 20.

 

Final exam

Exam - 100%

Classification improvement

Resit Exam.
