Objectives
The course aims at developing scientific research skills and techniques, namely the ones related to data analysis. Throughout the course, students must be able to identify a research theme and elaborate a rigorous research proposal about that theme.
Learning outcomes and competences
Statistical treatment of data using a specific software package.
Elaboration, presentation and discussion of a research proposal that must include 8among other things) the following items:
- Identification of the research theme, including a well-defined research question;
- Revision of the relevant literature;
- Identification and justification of the methodological options (namely in respect to the techniques employed in data collection and data analysis);
- Elaboration of the chronogram of the research tasks.

- The production of scientific knowledge and the research process: methodological considerations. Bibliographic datasets.
- Statistical analysis and the research process. Data collection. Surveys and inquiries. Sampling process. Statistical datasets.
- Data Analysis. Preliminary concepts and descriptive statistics. Econometric methods. Data treatment, using a specific software package.
- Presentation and discussion of the research proposals.

Eligibility for exams
1 test (10% of final mark), 1 assignment pertaining to specific methodologies (30% of final mark), presentation of a scientific paper (10%) and elaboration and presentation of a final report (50%)
Calculation formula of final grade
Assessment components:
Test about common subject classes (10%);
Assignment about specific methodologies (30%);
Presentation of scientific paper (10%);
Research proposal (report and oral presentation) (50%).
