Objectives

The course is aimed to give students knowledge and skills on energy markets analysis and dynamics.

Program

1. Microeconomic foundations of market analysis.
2. The coal market: price dynamics. The european case.
3. The oil market: technical costs of production; types of crude. The variety of contracts. Price dynamics and risk.
4. Natural gas market: NG and LNG. Markets and kinds of transactions. Market liberalization. Regulation. EC Directives.
5. The electricity market: main features. Market liberalization. EC Directives. Environmental Policy and Energy Policy: nuclear and renewables. Ex ante and ex post regulation. Types of markets and transactions. The Iberian market ( MIBEL). The portuguese case: features and problems.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Exposition of topics. Students are expected to interact.
International Markets consultation via internet.
Case studies.
