Cycles of Study/Courses
Objectives
Informations and readings will be provided to the students, so that they shoud be able to understand and discuss the main theoretical and practical issues of environmental economics.
Program
• The environmental dimension of economics: Introductory concepts. Connections between economics and the environment. The origins of environmental economics.
• Introductory approach to the economics of the environment: Externality and internalisation; Optimum level of pollution.
• Economics and politics of the environment: taxes, subsidies, negotiations, tradable emissions permits, voluntary agreements, mixed instruments. Some evaluation criteria of environmental policies
• Instruments of environmental policy applied to reality: Ecotaxes, green tax reform and the question of the double dividend, tradable permits in a regional and international basis - the flexible mechanisms from the Kyoto Protocol; voluntary agreements and ecomarketing
• Environmental management and ecological accounting
• Total economic value of the environment. Monetary evaluation of the environment. Theoretical fundamentals, most common evaluation methods (substitution and hipothetical markets), Practical case studies
• Growth and sustainable development: weak and strong sustentability; sustentability indicators
• New approaches in Environmental Economics: Ecological Economics
