Cycles of Study/Courses
Objectives
With this course we intend to provide the students with basic concepts of location and regional economics as well as to teach students how to use methods of regional analysis.
Program
I. Introduction - Space and economic theory. History of Spatial Economic Theory: a brief overview. Regional Economics versus other Regional Science disciplines. The space of analysis: the concept of economic space and region. Basic methods of regional analysis.
II. Theoretical foundations of Regional Economics – Location theory: seminal contributions.
III. The region as a system of urban centres – Central place theory, urban hierarchy and the ranking of towns. Applied analysis: the Portuguese case.
IV. Regional growth - Theoretical models and methods of analysis. Empirical analysis: the Portuguese case.
V. Regional development determinants: a partial analysis - Human resources; Infrastructures; Services.
VI. Regional development policies – Regional policy and regional planning; Regional policy in the European Union; Regionalisation and economic development: the Portuguese case.
