Objectives
Provide basic concepts of Informatics.
Provide the students with the capability to use some basic software
and/or programming languages.
Program
- Spreadsheets: Formulas and functions. Processing small quantities of data. Searching for and using data. Data views with pivot tables.
Operational aims: Using Excel.
- Relational databases:
Tables, relationships; queries (QBE and SQL); design of databases
(normalization, entities and relationships).
- Introduction to programming:
Data structures. Instructions. Composing functions. Processing datasets.
Use of data on Internet.
Operational aims: Programming in R.
- Data Analysis and elaboration of models decision making:
Classification; Decision trees and rules; linear regression;
exploratory analysis of data and data mining; E-commerce.
Operational aims: Data analysis in R. Exploratory data analysis in Economics. Preparation of histograms and linear regression models using some variables; Import / export of data between applications.
Main Bibliography
Lecture notes prepared by the lecturing team.
Teaching methods and learning activities
Theoretical-practical classes, including explanation, practical exercises and support in practicals.
Software
MS Excel, MS Access, R (www.r-project.org)
Evaluation Type
Distributed evaluation with final exam
Calculation formula of final grade
- It is not necessary to have a classification of practical part.
If the note of the practical part (MP) were inferior to the note of
the written exam (ME), the latter will have the weight of 100%.
- In other cases the final note is 0.7 ME + 0.3 MP, except if the difference
between 0.7 ME + 0.3 MP and the note of the written exam (ME) were superior to 2, in which case the final note will be ME+2.
