Abstract (EN):
The work described in this paper was developed for EUROFONE, one of the consortium which competed for a license to operate a GSM mobile telephone service in Portugal. The work was centered on forecasting the demand for the service, on the basis of which the consortium defined its Marketing Strategy and the Business Plan.
The forecast modelling procedure is described after presenting a brief discussion of the overall methodology adopted in the study.
The analysis of data concerning several European countries revealed that the service penetration curves were related to a measure of the relative price of the service (i.e. the average expenditure of a client during the first year of service usage, expressed as a percentage of the respective GDP per capita). This led to the development of a regression model in which service penetration is explained by the time elapsed from the launching of the service and the measure of relative price.
This model was extended to reflect the effects on the overall demand of each of the following price components: handset price plus connection charge, monthly charge and airtime rate. This extension was derived by applying the conjoint analysis technique to data collected from a sample representative of the main segments of the Portuguese market.
The effect on penetration of initial conditions prevailing at the launching of the service and of price changes occurring over time were also included in the forecasting model.
Finally the traffic generated by the service clients was spatially distributed using a gravity model in which the income and the consumption of petrol were adopted as explanatory variables.
