Resumo (PT): Esta dissertação é: a procura de respostas no passado aos problemas actuais. Para além disso, é também querer entender de que forma esse método pode ou não ser eficaz. É uma tentativa de organizar o caos em relação aos entendimentos que o autor tem sobre aquilo que pensa ser a disciplina da arquitectura. É um confronto entre o imaginário e a realidade que se torna objectual ao inserir o primeiro no segundo. Isso acontece através da representação da memória num instrumento muito próprio de regulamentação que é o arquivo. Com este método, o trabalho mergulha num passado relativamente próximo, defendendo o modernismo como um movimento na arquitectura que tirou partido dos instrumentos de representação da realidade nas várias àreas interdisciplinares em proveito do desenvolvimento e progresso da própria disciplina. Se no campo temporal o objecto de estudo é o moderno, no campo físico a cidade do Porto ganha o protagonismo como exemplo prático de proximidade. Uma última definição deste trabalho é a exposição e comparação de ideias e tópicos organizados sobre um mapa mental inevitavelmente caótico. Isto faz do trabalho um conjunto de inúmeros fragmentos de uma mesma matéria.

Abstract (EN): This dissertation is a quest for answers in the past to current problems. Furthermore, it is also an attempt to understand how effective this method can or cannot be. It is an endeavor to organize the chaos regarding the author’s understanding of what he believes to be the discipline of architecture. It is a confrontation between the imaginary and reality, which becomes objectified by inserting the former into the latter. This is accomplished through the representation of memory in a very specific regulatory instrument, which is the archive. With this method, the work delves into a relatively recent past, advocating modernism as a movement in architecture that took advantage of the instruments of representing reality in various interdisciplinary areas for the benefit of the development and progress of the discipline itself. While the object of study in the temporal field is the modern, in the physical realm, the city of Porto takes the spotlight as a practical example of proximity. One final definition of this work is the exhibition and comparison of organized ideas and topics on an inevitably chaotic mental map. This turns the work into a collection of numerous fragments of the same matter.
