Resumo (PT): O presente estudo consiste na análise dos resultados de aprendizagem esperados ¿ (intended) Learning Outcomes ¿ nos programas de licenciatura, mestrado e doutoramento em Geografia, nas instituições de ensino superior, em Portugal. O estudo procura responder a um conjunto de questões, no âmbito da aplicação do conceito de Learning Outcomes (LO) nas ciências sociais. O que são, como são formulados, de que forma se encontram alinhados com os quadros de qualificações, europeu e nacional, com os Descritores de Dublin e com os resultados do projeto Tuning ou com os guiões de avaliação para acreditação da Agência de Avaliação e Acreditação do Ensino Superior? Através dos Learning Outcomes , que informação obtemos sobre os programas? Como é que eles respondem às necessidades e expectativas da sociedade e do mercado de trabalho? Os referenciais dos quadros de qualificações e os Descritores de Dublin são demasiado gerais e qualquer exercício de alinhamento terá de ser feito caso a caso, partindo de dentro das disciplinas ou áreas científicas. A formulação dos LO ¿ o wording ¿ não é o aspeto mais relevante, nem existe uma única maneira correta de os escrever; pelo contrário, são um elemento de um conjunto de informação mais ampla. Pode haver algum risco de um excesso de normalização, quer vertical, no sentido das instituições procurarem copiar modelos de excelência, com vista a melhorar a sua posição em rankings , quer horizontal, levando a que as instituições repliquem os perfis de outras ou se concentrem apenas no alinhamento com os padrões mínimos das agências de acreditação. No entanto, o desenvolvimento dos LO tem-se convertido numa peça fundamental dos instrumentos de garantia de qualidade no ensino superior e tem levado à construção de curricula de forma mais transparente e precisa.

Abstract (EN): This paper includes the analysis of the Intended Learning Outcomes (LO) in Geography programmes in higher education in Portugal. It is the aim of the paper to answer a set of questions in the context of LO use in the social sciences. What are LO, how are they formulated, how are they aligned with the European and National qualifications frameworks or with the Dublin Descriptors, the Tuning Project or the guidelines and standards of the Portuguese Accreditation Agency A3ES? What kind of information on the programmes do we get through the Intended Learning Outcomes? How do they respond to the needs and expectations of society and the labor market? Qualification frameworks as well as the Dublin Descriptors are too general and any alignment exercise will have to be made case by case, from within the disciplines or scientific areas. The formulation of LO - the wording - is not the most important aspect, nor is there a single correct way to write them; rather, they are an element of a wider set of information. The definition of LO may involve a risk of excessive standardization, either vertically or horizontal. In the first case, institutions may look for models of excellence and copy them in order to improve their position in rankings; in the second case, institutions replicate the profiles of others, or focus only in the alignment with the minimum standards of accreditation agencies. However, the development of LO turned out to be a key tool on quality assurance in higher education and has led to a more transparent manner of curricula design and development.
