Admission requirements


Candidates fulfilling the following conditions can submit applications for admission to the Master’s courses:

a) Graduates from Portuguese universities in any field of knowledge, or expected to graduate prior to July 15, 2013, graduates from foreign universities, who have been awarded a degree of first cycle, under the rules of the Bologna Protocol;

b) Graduates from foreign universities, with a degree considered as equivalent to the first degree of the University of Porto School of Economics;

c) Candidates presenting an academic, scientific or professional curriculum accepted by the Scientific Board of Economics Faculty as demonstrating good capacity to attend the courses;

d) Candidates that expect to graduate in the current academic year (until July 15) can apply conditionally. Applicants under these conditions, instead of the final degree, should indicate the arithmetic average weighted by ECTS in all grades already approved.
Candidates that expect to graduate in the current academic year can apply conditionally and if admitted should enroll between July 27 and August 02.
Those that not have completed the degree in this date are excluded from the first round of applications.

Please note: applicants who are not fluent in Portuguese language should be aware that FEP has programmes fully taught in English.

 

Candidates fulfilling the following conditions can submit applications for admission to the PhD’s courses:

a) Holders of Masters degree (or those with the equivalent qualification from foreign countries);

b) Holders of Honours degree (or those with the equivalent qualification from foreign countries), and with a relevant curriculum that certifies solid capabilities to pursue the doctoral course;

c) Holders of a relevant curriculum that certifies solid capabilities to pursue the doctoral course.

Please note: The doctoral programmes are taught in English so applicants should be fluent in English.

Part-time Enrolllment corresponds to a registration at the maximum of 37,5 ECTS per academic year.

In the academic year 2013-2014, students applying to the Master in Finance and the Master in Management can apply for FEP Excellence Grant (from the 25th of March to the 26th of April). Further information in the regulation, in this link.

The main entity responsible for granting scholarships to students of PhD Programmes at FEP has so far been FCT (Science and Technology Foundation). www.fct.pt

Application Procedures


Applications must be submitted on-line at www.fep.up.pt

Masters

Applicants to Master’s Programmes can apply for up to three masters. Each applicant should consider that FEP has masters fully taught in Portuguese as well as masters fully taught in English. The "order of preference" is compulsory so all candidates should indicate the order of preference of the courses intended (1st / 2nd or 3 rd. option / preference). Will be not accepted applications that indicate the same order of preference in more than one course.
Candidates admitted to more than one master course will be placed in that one which was indicated with the highest preference.

PhD’s

Candidates for the PhD in Business and Management Studies, and only them, should attach a document with a maximum of five pages, written in English, describing:
a) Their areas of interest or (if applicable) research and
b) Their ideas for, if possible, the theme they have for the thesis project

Fees


For the submission of the application to a course of study is due to pay the application fee in the amount of 55 €. The application to n ≤ 3 cycles of study involves the payment of the amount of nx 55 €.

requesting all the information’s about the procedures to follow to do the payment of application fee by bank transfer.

Evaluation Criteria / Selection Procedure

 

Masters

The selection and ranking of candidates will be made by the following criteria:

a) Grades of undergraduate and other (s) degree (s) or Diploma (s) graduate obtained by the applicant;

b) Academic and/or scientific Curriculum;

c) Working experience.


Can be subject to evaluation: motivation, knowledge of foreign languages and availability of time. In assessing applications an interview can be used with eliminatory status.
Detailed criteria for ranking and weights are:

Master in Management | Master in Finance

1) 70% Academic CV (Undergraduate degree average mark; adequacy of the undergraduate degree with the master; additional training (master, post-graduation degrees or course units of master level concluded; GMAT)
 2) 10% Professional CV (relevance of the activities, of the scientific area in relation to the activities developed and the duration of the activities);
 3) 10% Extracurricular activities;
 4) 10% Motivation (choosing the master as a 1st option; letter of motivation of the candidate; course units of master level, an interview might be requested).
Presentation of 2 letters of recommendation for applicants who did not do the undergraduate degree at FEP. In the programmes taught in English the presentation of language certificates (TOEFL, IELTS, CAE) will be valued.


Master in Modeling, Data Analysis and Decision Support Systems
1)    40% Average mark (undergraduate degree, other degrees or graduation diplomas); Scientific knowledge in Statistics and/or Computation and/or Mathematics as preferential criteria;
2)    30% Academic CV or Scientific; research activities, publication of papers, participation in projects, conferences as preferential criteria;
3)    30% Professional CV; professional activities linked with forecasting, data analysis and decision support as preferential criteria.
Note: presentation of GMAT results will also be a preferential criterion.

 

PhD

Candidates will be ranked on the basis of marks obtained in the courses of first and second cycle, as well as postgraduate courses and by assesment of their academic, scientific and professional CV. Can be carried out interviews to evaluate motivation, knowledge of foreign languages and availability of time. The interview can be used as a screening method with eliminatory status.

Doctoral Programme in Business and Management Studies
A - 1st cycle degree - bachelor ( it will be use the final grade of first cycle programme and adequacy of the 1st cycle degree to the doctoral program in business sciences)
B - 2nd cycle degree - master´s ( adequacy of the 2nd cycle degree to the doctoral program in business sciences)
C - scientific CV
D - Letter of Intent written in English, in which the candidate expresses his/her motivation for carrying out a PhD in Business and Management Studies; his/her ideas for research and the thesis theme and project
Final Rate = 0,35 A + 0,35 B + 0,15 C + 0,15 D
 
Doctoral Programme in Economics
Rate = (final mark of bachelor degree on a scale of 0 to 20 values) + (between 0 and 2 values for completion of a doctoral program) + (between 0 and 2 values for frequency and / or completion of a Master's degree) + (between 0 and 2 values for assessment of educational and professional background) + (between 0 and 2 values for GRE or GMAT marks).
