Personal Presentation

Rui Alves obtained the degree Licenciatura em Economia from Faculdade de Economia, Universidade do Porto, in October 1974. In February 1986 he obtained a Master of Science in Operations Research, and in October 1988 a Ph.D. in Business Administration, both at the Simon School of Business Administration, University of Rochester. In June 1989 he was granted equivalence to the degree of Doctor of Economics (concentration in Quantitative Methods for Economics and Management).

He started his academic career in January 1978, and retired in January 2022 from the position of Professor in the Management Department.

He was a member of the Ethical Council of U. Porto, of the Scientific Committee of the Ph.D. in Business and Management Studies, and of the Scientific Committee of the Master in Health Care Management and Economics. He has held several academic and managerial positions in Faculdade de Economia and in Universidade do Porto, such as president of the Pedagogical Council (2010-2018), member of the university Senate (2002-2006), Director of the Master in Management (1996-2004), and Director of Faculdade de Economia (1993-1998).

He is a member of the following academic or scientific associations:
- INFORMS - Institute for the Operations Research and Management Sciences.
- EurOMA - European Operations Management Association.
- APDIO - Portuguese Association of Operational Research.
- BETA GAMMA SIGMA, the honor society for collegiate schools of business.
