Can I take a programme through distance learning?
No, the School of Economics and Management of the University of Porto does not offer e-learning programmes.
Can I enrol in pre-experience master's programmes even if I don't have a bachelor's degree in economics or management?
The pre-experience master's programmes assume the student has basic training in economics, management or finance. Students with other training may, however, apply. The Directors of the programme will decide if the student's previous training is adequate for enrolment in the master's programme.
Where can I find more information on the content of the master's programmes?
You can find more general information about each master's programme through their respective web pages. Through the same link, you can also view the study plan of each course. Each curricular unit also has its own link where you can view its respective information, including course content.
APPLICATIONS
Can I apply for more than one master's programme?
Yes, there is no limit to the number of master's you can apply for.
If I apply for more than one master's programme, do I have to pay more than one application fee?
Yes, you will pay one application fee per application.
If I apply for more than one master's, how should I indicate my order of preference? Is there a form to fill out?
The application Bulletin, as well as the respective submission form, explain how to indicate your order of preference.
I am still attending a bachelor's programme. Can I apply for a master's programme? Is there an enrolment period for students who are finishing their programme in September?
Those who have already completed their bachelor's degree or those who are reasonably expected to finish by the end of July of the current year may apply during the first call of applications. Those who are due to finish in September may apply during the second call, if one is held (a second call is only opened when there are vacancies remaining after the first call).
Do FEP bachelor's programme students have any advantage when applying for FEP master's programmes?
No. FEP master's programmes are not integrated, therefore, internal students apply under equal circumstances as external students.
Do FEP students need to submit certificates of completed academic training? And other U.Porto students?
No, students do not need to submit certificates for training completed at the University of Porto. When completing the application, in the section requiring document submission, simply submit your academic history from SIGARRA.
What are discipline certificates? Is it simply to show proof of the disciplines I've completed?
A certificate is an official document issued by the School, on letterhead paper duly signed and stamped by the responsible body, listing all of the approved curricular units completed by the student, their respective ECTS and marks earned. If the training in question is pre-Bologna or non-Bologna foreign training, it is not required (nor is it often possible) to include the ECTS.
Is there a minimum grade for entry?
The selection criteria for each master's programme are published in the application Bulletin each academic year. Some programmes may require a minimum bachelor's programme grade.
Is it mandatory to present certificates of knowledge of English to enrol in an English language master's at FEP?
The selection criteria, as well as the elements that are required and/or valued will be published in the application Bulletin for each academic year. Normally, a certificate of knowledge of English is not required, although in some cases such certification may be valued.
Is the GMAT exam required for entry to any of the master's?
The selection criteria, as well as the elements that are required and/or valued will be published in the application Bulletin for each academic year.
The GMAT exam is mandatory for application to the QTEM network that FEP belongs to.

Can international students attend the master's programmes? Are the application documents the same?
Yes, both Portuguese and foreign students may apply under equal circumstances. However, additional documentation may be requested, specifically an official statement/certificate indicating the final classification of the academic degree/diploma, along with the corresponding grading scale used (or an equivalent document in the case of final-year candidates). The rest of the required documentation is the same in both cases. During the application phase, the submission of legalised diplomas/certificates is not required. However, if the student is offered a place on the master's programme, they must, prior to enrolment/registration, send by email (admiss@fep.up.pt) the original certificates or diplomas from studies completed abroad, which must be duly legalised by the Portuguese Embassy in the country where the degrees were awarded, or through the Hague Apostille (in eligible cases).
Must recommendation letters come from companies, or can they be from companies and professors?
Recommendation letters may be academic (ideally from non-FEP professors, in the case of FEP students) or professional.
ADMISSION AND PLACEMENT OF CANDIDATES
How is the placement process carried out?
Placement is done according to the criteria and elements defined for each master's programme in the application Bulletin.
What are the admission and placement criteria for each master's programme (academic training, experience, alma mater, etc.)?
The admission criteria are legally defined. Those who may apply for a 2nd cycle course of study conferring a master's degree include:

The application Bulletin will indicate which master's programmes may include interviews as a criterion for selection and/or tie-breaking between candidates.
COURSE OPERATION
On which days are the master's courses lectured?
The timetables are established each academic year. The pre-experience master's programmes (Economics, Management, Finance, Economics of Business and Strategy) are held during daytime hours. The other programmes are offered on an after-work schedule, typically taking place 4 or 5 days per week from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Is it obligatory to attend all classes?
Each curricular unit has its own evaluation regime, which will include class attendance. To obtain this information, consult the information page for each discipline.

EVALUATION

I don't have TOEFL or IELTS, but I speak English fluently. Are these certificates mandatory?

I don't speak English, but I would like to complete a doctorate. Is there another option in Portuguese?
No. Doctoral programmes are taught exclusively in English.
COURSE OPERATION
Schedules are defined for each academic year. The PhD in Economics is usually taught during the daytime and the PhD in Business and Management Studies in the evening.
If a student completes the curricular portion of the PhD (the first 2 years), does that confer a master's degree (Research Master Diploma, for example)?
No. Completing the curricular portion of a doctoral programme confers a certificate, not a degree, with the following designation: "Advanced Studies (3rd cycle) in Business and Management Studies" (for the PhD in Business and Management Studies) and "Advanced Studies (3rd cycle) in Economics" (for the PhD in Economics).
SCHOLARSHIPS
Are there doctoral merit scholarships (from FCT or other organisations)?
The University of Porto does not grant merit scholarships for doctoral programmes.
What type of support does FEP provide to students who want to apply for an FCT doctoral scholarship for the Doctorate in Economics?
The main institution responsible for granting study scholarships in Portugal is the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia. For more information about study scholarships, you can consult the website of FCT.
How many places are available each year (on average) for FCT scholarships?
This question should be directed to the respective services of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia.
Can I apply for scholarships if I only have a bachelor's degree and want to enter a doctoral programme directly?
For information regarding study scholarships provided by the Social Action Services of the University of Porto, consult the site of SASUP. Questions regarding FCT scholarships should be directed to the respective services of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia.
