Objectives
It is often assumed that "more effective leadership" is key to improve organizational performance. Yet, it is also increasingly evident that traditional understandings of what constitutes leadership - heroic and transformational models - have not lived up to their promise. This course aims to contribute to re-think leadership by analysing comparatively the heroic, post-heroic and critical approaches; exploring the centrality of power in the study of leadership; and developing a reflexive attitude towards leadership, in particular in organizational settings.
Learning outcomes and competences
- an understanding of leadership that challenges the reductionist conceptualizations of mainstream approaches;
- thinking leadership beyond leaders and heroic, grandiose views;
- to understand the paradoxical, mundane nature of leadership;
- a self-diagnosis and a personal reflection around own and others' experiences of leading and being led.
