Abstract (EN): The metallomechanics industry has a key place in the chain of production, generating finished products and raw materials for many other industrial sectors. Thus, in order to contribute to a better knowledge of the accidents in this sector, the overall objective of this study was to perform an analysis over the main causes of accidents in this industry in Portugal. Was used a inquiry that answers to the criteria set out in ESAW. The study analyzed the 66 accidents suffered in 2011 by 58 workers, in an average universe of 504 workers, belonging to 17 metallomechanics companies, located in northern Portugal. The accidents occurred mainly among workers under 30 years (41%) and less than 5 years in the company (64%). In 33% of accidents have resulted a superficial lesion with loss of less than one working day. The body parts most affected were the eyes (32%). The main cause of the accidents (65%) was the loss of control of the tool or work equipment.
