Objectives
The Curricular Unit of Political Science aims to provide students with basic knowledge of political facts, including, but not limited to, the theory of the State, as well as of the history of political thought, adopting a multisciplinary perspective in the cintext of the graduation in Law. Students should be able to identify corec concepts of political science and political theory, such as system of government, poliitcal regime, State form, electoral system, and party system, and apply them to life situations and discussions, recognizing critical issues of the organization of political systems. They must also be able to articulate the concepts of political science with the normative options resulting from the current Portuguese democratic constitutional model. Students are also expected to be able to discuss topic issues currently at the center of political debate.
Contents and methodologies are coherent with the objectives of the Curricular Unit, providing students with basic knowledge on the topics studied, complementing and developing concepts studied in Public Law course, particularly in Constitutional Law. They also enable the development of basic and specific competences, namely, to carry out autonomous research and to problematize and critically discuss the issues addressed, relevant in academic and professional context.
Learning outcomes and competences
The topics covered aim to provide students with basic knowledge of political facts, including, but not limited to, the theory of the State, as well as of the history of political thought. A multidisciplinary approach is adopted. Contents aim to enable students to understand the reality and the institutions of the political society, where Law “lives”, complementing and developing concepts studied in Public Law courses, particularly in Constitutional Law. The contents and bibliography also aim to enable students to carry out autonomous research and to problematize and critically discuss the studied contents.
The syllabus set are consistent with the goals of the C.U. in that it is intended to provide fundamental knowledge about the subject matter, so students can apply them later in their academic, personal and professional life.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Teaching and learning methods adopted in theoretical and practical classes seek to combine the transmission of basic knowledge of political sciences in a pluralistic manner with the motivation of students to reflect personally and in a reasoned manner on the issues presented, while keeping in mind the specific circumstances of students of the first semester of the first year of graduation.
Teaching methods combine a) lectures; b) discusions and debates concerning studied concepts and current topics of political debate; c) oral presentations at round-tables, followed by debate with coleagues and lecturers; d) analisys and discussion of relevant legislation and case law; e) resolution of exercises and practical hypothesis to apply the acquired knowledge, and f) exercices of preparation to the exam (or to the continuous assessment tests, for students choosing this option).
Teachind and learning methodologies allow the student to assess the degree to which the subject is being followed and are compatible with continuous assessment.
