Objectives

1. Making the students conscious of the need for Law History’s knowledge in order to achieve a firm juridical formation.

2. Providing them an adequate learning of the essential content of Roman Law History, of Iberian Law History and Portuguese Law History, unavoidable cultural foundation, due to the Global and European context of juridical institutions.

Learning outcomes and competences

Knowing Roman's juridical experience,  Iberian's juridical experience and Portuguese juridical experience: Law as the art of just, key concepts with Roman origin, the history of Roman Law, the history of Iberian Law and history of Portuguese Law. These results will give the skills, which are necessary for a better understanding of all the subjects included in the Law License Degree.

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

A basic knowledge of Universal History and Portuguese history is required.

Law History: personal understanding. Introduction.
The formation of the political. Neolithic. Mesopotamia. Sparta and Athens.
Part I - ELEMENTS OF ROMAN LAW HISTORY: Chapter 1 – Essential concepts. Chapter 2 – Political organization. Chapter 3 – The Sources of Ius Civile. Chapter 4 – Compilations. Chapter 5 – The survival of Roman Law.
Part II - ELEMENTS OF IBERIAN HISTORY: Chapter 1 - The period of origins. Chapter 2 -  The Roman Period. Chapter 3 - Germanic or Visigotic Period. Chapter 4 – The age of Muslim rule and of Christian take-over.
PART III – ELEMENTS OF PORTUGUESE LAW HISTORY

Teaching methods and learning activities

Distributed evaluation without final exam under the new "Regulamento de Avaliação de Conhecimentos da licenciatura em Direito". There will be a mandatory written test at the end of each semester. Before these tests, a detailed program with the required contents will be published. There will control of presences, in teoretical and in practical lessons.

Evaluation trough a unique final examination (2 rounds) will only be available for those students who will not apply for distributed evaluation or who will give it up.
