Objectives

The main purpose of this course is to introduce to the structure, systems and function of the criminological thinking. In that sense, the course aims to:
- Develop a first interdisciplinary and integrated perspective of the criminological field (epistemological, theoretical and methodological levels).
- Provide an overview of the fundamental and applied contemporary criminology.
- Identify the main principles of theoretical paradigms and their implications to criminological research
- Provide an understanding of the process of scientific research and methodological thinking
- Provide an overview of the relation between criminology and criminal justice system
- Identify major questions in the criminological interventions -- Develop the skills required to research and systematize information relevant to criminology.
Notes: the course should be considered in articulation with the course of Comportamento Antissocial e Criminal.

Learning outcomes and competences

The students must be able to identify and distinguish the different conceptual and theoretical tools made available by Criminology throughout its evolution, and should use them for the purpose of dissertation.

Program

A-Definition, object and delimitation of the criminological field 1. Extensive and comprehensive definitions 2. Object and major areas of criminological knowledge: crime, criminality, deviance, the criminal, victims, social reaction. 3. Criminology’s epistemological status 3.1. Criminology in the frame of social sciences: interdisciplinarity, unity and autonomy 3.2. Theoretical and empirical criminology 3.3. Fundamental and applied criminology
B -1. Criminology in its dimension of empirical research. 2 .Introduction to the most relevant data sources for criminologists.
C. Historical approach to criminology: the Classical School, the positivistic School, early prison reform movements, conceptions concerning Normal and Pathological.
D. Special foucs on the development of criminological inquiry in Portugal, in the early 20th century.
E. Theoretical paradigms: 1. Etiological criminology - in articulation with the course Comportamento Antissocial e Criminal.  2. Sociological theories: social disorganization, anomy, differential association; Labelling theories;
F- New trends in Criminology: 1. Rational choice and situational prevention; 2. New topics of research: fear of crime and the victim.
