Objectives

The course aims to help provide students the necessary tools to a critical, autonomous and sustained reflection on the law and a personal research and deepening of the themes.

These objectives will be pursued through study, reflection and questioning around some issues, more or less "classic", of the field of philosophy of law and political philosophy, using the contribution of various currents of thought, authors and  works, as well as with openness to interdisciplinarity.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students are expected to acquire knowledge in topics addressed in the discipline and develop basic and specific skills, including skills of independent research, analysis capability and critical reflection on the addressed issues, applicable in academic and professional context .

Teaching methods and learning activities

All the methods used in University teaching, such as lectures, seminars, debates, as well as essay writing for students who choose continuous assessment evaluation regime (see bellow).

Under continuous assessment regime, oral interventions and tests are assessment components (see bellow).

Eligibility for exams

According to rules enforced in FDUP.

For studentes choosing continuous assessment presence in classes is mandatory under article 33.º RAC. 


Calculation formula of final grade

1. Evaluation through final exam: according to rules in force in FDUP.

2. Besides the evaluation regime through final exam, students will also be able to choose the continuous assessment regime without final exam (optional), according to the regulations governing evaluation in force in FDUP (RAC).

See articles 34.º and 35.º/3

2.1. Under article 36.º and 39.º/1 e 3 RAC, continuous assessment grade results from:


30% - oral presentations (2 of them mandatory) and discussion

70% - written tests (2 tests, one for each seminar, 35% each) 

2.3. Under articles 32.º/2 and 35.º/1 RAC, students will be excluded from continuous assessment regime in case they do not deliver the 2 mandatory oral presentations or do not take the 2 written tests.  

Less then 8 (out of 20) on any of the tests also determines exclusion from continuous assessment.
