Objectives
1. Understand the origins of the contemporary police model from the historical analysis of different forms of police at different times and social and political circumstances.
2. Identify and distinguish the security concept, its history, relationship with power, and its evolution and changes until nowadays.
3. Distinguish the different models of contemporary police: centralist, decentralized, federal.
4. Know the history, the current structure and critically analyse the some of the major police models of Europe, America, Africa, and Asia with emphasis on the Portuguese model.
5. Know the history, the current structure and critically analyse the European space of security and justice.
6. Understand the functioning of the private security in relation with public one in contemporary societies.
Learning outcomes and competences
It is expected the students to identify and distinguish the concept of police, their history, their models, and their evolution and changes until today. The dynamic construction of police models is underlined by contact with the most historic and culturally relevant models in perspective, with special emphasis on Spanish and Portuguese models.

2. The concept of police in Portugal.
3. The state and the emergence of new security policies: The governance, its actors and its application within the Portuguese public administration
4. Origins of the contemporary police model: historical analysis.
5. Contemporary police models:
a) The concept of model: dynamic concept, theoretical, professional and community police models;
b) European Models: Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, Germany, Italy and UK;
c) North American models: USA, Canada and Mexico;
d) South American models: Brazil and Argentina;
e) Other models: Russia, China and Angola;
6.The European area of security: Interpol, Trevi, Schengen and Europol

Teaching methods and learning activities
Theoretical-practical classes combining the contents presentation with the realization of exercises of knowledge application. We highlight the working groups, focusing on the analysis and discussion of concrete police models prepared by each student.
Type of evaluation: distributed evaluation with final exam.
Terms of frequency: in accordance with applicable regulations.
Evaluation Formula: Final classification = 0,25 (distributed evaluation) + 0,75 (final exam).
