The aim of this curricular unit is to provide the students with the basic frameworks of the legal system. It is meant to see Law as a body in motion and not an estatic one, so it is given major relevance to the methodological issues.
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Define law and distinguish it from other normative orders;
- Identify the branches of law and its division;
- Understand the system of sources of law in force in Portugal;
- Recognize the existence of other systems of law;
- Understand the techniques used by law;
- Interpret and apply the law;
- Integrate gaps of the law;
- Resolving cases of law enforcement in time;
- Understand the system of protection of rights.

Students can choose any of the books mentioned in the main bibliography for the purpose of examination, without prejudice to additional bibliographical information, in particular for certain points that are not contemplated by such books. For the summary the reference book will be Santos Justo's.
Theoretical-practical classes: Exposition of the contents of the discipline and use of case-studies, as well as solving practical exercises .
