Objectives

The objectives are :
Understand the concept of security , its complexity and the debates and critiques around him .
Distinguish the historical origins of the forms of security.
Identify and critically relate the elements of construction of safety and their interaction with the cycles of violence , and fear-power-domination spiral.
Understand how security works in the frame of the modern state, and identify the problems derived from his crisis.
Identify the transformations caused by globalization and the emergence of new security markets.
Perceive and describe the security policies and its cycle
Identify the actors of security policies and their resources.
Critically analyze the public security policies.



Learning outcomes and competences

The students should be able , at the end of the course, to identify and distinguish the mechanisms of violence, fear , security , power and dominion preoduction. Should be able to establish his relationship and its complexity in modern and postmodern Western societies, reflecting critically on them . Still should be able to understand the dynamic mechanisms of construction of power and control from the security policies and their application to transform reality .

It may be useful , but not essential , to have knowledge in subjects such as History , Philosophy, Law , Sociology , Political Science , Police, Administration.

1 . Defining security and insecurity , critical discussion of the definition
2 . Dynamic Concept and historical development of security and their complexity .
3 . Greco- Latin and Eastern monotheist origins .
4 . Mechanisms of violence , fear , security , power and dominion production.
. 5 The thresholds of security: threats , fear and panic .
6 . Safety , power and dominion.
7 . Security and the Modern State.
8 Current issues of security:  Militarization of security and construction of the enemy.
. 9 Crisis of the modern state and security changes: the " glocal " phenomenon and the need for new security policies.
. 10th Security policies: mechanisms , actors and resources.
11 . Implemented security policies.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical and practical lessons, combining exposition of the contents with the exercises of application of the knowledge transmitted . Work in small groups focusing on analyzing and discussing scientific papers and other documentary sources previously prepared by each student.
