Objectives

Understanding:
1 The insecurity phenomenon and its relation with criminality in contemporary society, through the knowledge and critical analysis of its multiple dimensions, meanings and implications
2. The different theories on the evolution of the insecurity phenomenon, in its relation with crime. Empirical evidences.
3. Empirical research on subjective and objective insecurity
4. Main measures of criminality: official statistics, victimization surveys and self-reported delinquency surveys
5. Methods of approaching the insecurity feeling

I - Conceptual definitions and theoretical approaches
1. Subjective and objective Insecurity
2. Fear of crime and insecurity feelings
3. Fear of victimization and security concern
4. Social construction of the insecurity feeling: origins of fear
5. Differential approaches: who fears?
II - Empirical researches
1. Methods of analysis of criminality: a) official statistics b) victimization surveys c) self-reported delinquency surveys d) validity and association of different methods
2. Methods of analysis of the insecurity feeling: a) inquiries b) qualitative instruments
3. Discrepancies between criminality and insecurity feeling
III - Public regulation of security
1. The State’s action: a) Police and justice b) local and communitarian prevention policies

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical sessions are used to describe and discuss the main contents of the program. Practice sessions are orientated toward the analysis and discussion of scientific literature and other resources previously prepared by the students.
