Objectives

Actively understand:
- the historical and theoretical developments of criminology, perspectivated from the criminological field, with special emphasis toward the current state of knowledge
- theoretical knowledge about the nature and experiencing of criminal victimization and the main results of the empirical investigation developed in this field.
- methods used to study the victim
- victims’ place within the criminal justice system (rights and needs) and its relation with the juridical and political developments that emerged in this area, both at national and international level
- contemporary debates about the politics concerning crime victims

1. Emergence and development of victimology as a scientific subject

II Theories about victimization and empirical evidence
1. Current debates about victimology
2. The empirical methods used to study the victim
2.1 International victimization surveys
2.2 Data and patterns of criminal victimization: incidence prevalence and risks of criminal victimization; time and spatial patterns of victimization; socio-demographic characteristics of the crime victims

III Consequences of victimization
1. Fundamental concepts: victim, types of victims, sources of victimization, victims’ social representations; experience of victimization and dynamics of the victim-offender relation
2. Secondary victimization and victims needs

IV Victim and justice system
1. Development of the victim position in the criminal justice system and in criminology. Victims’ rights within the Portuguese criminal justice system. International comparisons.
2. Restorative justice
3. Victimology in action

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical sessions are used to describe and discuss the main contents of the program. Practice sessions are orientated toward the analysis and discussion of scientific literature and other resources previously prepared by the students.
