Objectives

- Understanding and distinguishing different kinds of normativities, as well as the processes underlying its evolution
- Understanding concepts and theories of social control
- Understanding the processes of criminalization in its relationship with the functioning of social control instances
- Viewing the criminal phenomenon through the processes of regulation and governance

Program

1. Concept and theory of systems
2. Concept of social control: normativity and its typologies (law, rule, value); regulation, governance, managerialism and the criminal phenomenon.
3. Theories of social control
4. The two major systems: formal social control and informal social control
5. Trends for criminalization and decriminalization; primary and secondary criminalization
6. Normativity’s evolution in the dialectics of control systems and social systems; disorder, order and social organization
7. Empirical research on behaviour of the law, human behaviour and its relationships

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical sessions are used to describe and discuss the main contents of the program. Practice sessions are orientated toward the analysis and discussion of scientific literature and other resources previously prepared by the students.
