Abstract (EN):
The Frenchay Activities Index (FAI) is designed to evaluate functional capacities of daily life instrumental activities. The purpose of this study was to validate FAI, to Portuguese stroke patients. Participants were consecutively approached in two medicine wards of a general hospital. After a first phone contact to request the eligible participants' collaboration, a questionnaire was sent by mail, if the subject was disabled or didn't have help to fill in, the datum were collected by phone interview. We proposed a single type of answer for every questions of FAI; all items were scored from 1 to 4(could not do at all, very difficult, a little difficult, and not difficult at all). Others scales were used, such as modified Rankin, Barthel and COOP WONCA. 75,6%(273) patients accepted to participate. Patients had an average of 69 years old, and 3,6 years of formal education. The factorial solution found for females suggested two components. The first factor integrates the domestic and social activities, the second, occupational activities and heavy domestic work. For males, it suggested one factor. Modified FAI presented alpha Cronbach coefficients between 0,85 and 0,96 and high correlations with the studied scales. The new version of FAI shows an useful instrument in assessment of stroke patient's quality of life.
