Abstract (EN): Sequencing of the HVRI region of mtDNA in 100 unrelated individuals from North Portugal showed that this Iberian population presented a high level of sequence diversity and a peculiar distribution of pairwise nucleotide differences comparatively to other neighbouring populations. Classification of sequences in haplogroups (based on HVRI and position 73 of HVRII) revealed the presence of all major European clusters. Besides those, sequences belonging to North African and Sub-Saharan haplogroups (U6, L2 and L3) were also found reflecting the African influence under the mitochondrial gene pool of this Iberian population.
