Abstract (EN): An improvement on a curvature based numerical-experimental method for damage location in structures is presented. A speckle shear interferometer is used to measure the rotation fields. The curvature fields, i.e., the rotation fields spatial derivatives are computed by a numerical method. A carbon fibre reinforced epoxy plate, subjected to impact damages was tested for damaged location. The experimental results show a high correlation between perturbations or discontinuities in the curvature fields and the damage position. This study also demonstrates the superior performance of the curvature method using measured rotation fields instead of measured displacement fields. © Civil-Comp Press, 2008.
