Abstract (EN):
The calculus of variations has a long and rich history of interaction with other branches of mathematics such as geometry and differential equations, and with physics, particularly mechanics. In more recent years, the theory of calculus of variations has been used by economical scientists as well as by electrical engineers. This beautiful theory is nearly as old as the calculus, and both subjects were developed somewhat in parallel. The classical continuous calculus of variations deals with finding extrema for functionals; the candidates in competition for an extremum are thus functions as opposed to vectors in ¿n. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
