Abstract (EN): The history of Alfama, an old riverside area of Lisbon, is outlined. Alfama's contemporary problems are described, among them degraded housing stock, a large non-working population and a high proportion of empty homes. Finally, recent measures to rehabilitate the area while retaining its social and cultural values are listed. © 1995.
