Resumo (PT): A inadequação pedagógica dos tratados antigos, a sua excessiva extensão, obscuridade ou incompletude, tornara‑se um topos humanista ao longo do séc. XVI. Para a caracterização da pedagogia jesuítica muito contribuíram a história pessoal de Stº Inácio, textos fundadores como as Constituições, os ordines studiorum, as várias versões da Ratio, o magistério de pedagogos como Pedro Perpinhão e Cipriano Soares. A pedagogia retórica já nos primeiros colégios ganha espaço fundamental e a aquisição da eloquentia constitui‑se como um dos objetivos a alcançar em todos os graus de ensino. Neste capítulo procurar‑se‑á perceber que expectativas, que objetivos e resultados a elaboração do compêndio do P. Cipriano Soares visou satisfazer. Fixando os textos antigos como únicos e exclusivos recursos escolares, o De arte rhetorica substituiu as artes de Vaseu e Ringelberg por uma espécie de seleta de retores clássicos, via rápida para a proficiência oratória. Cipriano Soares exclui os modernos em nome de uma desejada ortodoxia estética equivalente à ortodoxia doutrinal. Assim se tornou o De arte rhetorica texto oficial da Companhia, mantendo viva e a funcionar a teoria clássica, ainda no final do séc. XVI, na Ratio Studiorum e na retórica de Soares. Por fim, importará averiguar se o compêndio publicado em Coimbra em 1562 influenciou ou não a vastíssima produção retórica dos Padres da Companhia no século seguinte.

Abstract (EN): The pedagogical inadequacy of the ancient treatises – be it their excessive length, obscurity, or incompleteness – had become a topos for 16th‑century humanists. Jesuit pedagogy was shaped by the personal history of St. Ignatius, by foundational texts such as the Constitutiones, ordines studiorum, Ratio’s numerous versions, and by the teachings of educators like Pedro Perpinhão and Cipriano Soares. Rhetorical pedagogy played a fundamental role even in the early colleges and the mastery of eloquentia became one of the central objectives at all levels of study. In this chapter we will try to understand what expectations, objectives, and outcomes Cipriano Soares’s collection sought to provide. By establishing ancient texts as the sole and exclusive educational resource, De arte rhetorica replaced the manuals of Vasaeus and Ringelberg with a sort of digest of classical rhetoricians, providing a fast track to oratorical proficiency. Cipriano Soares excludes modern authors in the pursuit of a desired aesthetic orthodoxy equivalent to doctrinal orthodoxy. Thus, De arte rhetorica became the official text of the Society of Jesus. As a result, by the end of the 16th century, classical theory remained alive and operational in the Ratio Studiorum and Soares’s rhetoric. Lastly, we shall ascertain whether the compendium published in Coimbra in 1562 influenced the vast rhetorical production of the Fathers of the Society in the following century.
