Resumo (PT): A generalização da Internet tem implicações nos mais variados domínios, entre os quais a educação não constitui excepção. A facilidade de comunicação e de acesso à informação são os dois factores principais que prometem criar um novo paradigma neste domínio, que a breve prazo relegará para segundo plano o ensino e a aprendizagem centrados na sala de aulas. Esta promessa não é no entanto nova, tendo já sido feita por diversas tecnologias desde os primeiros decénios deste século, pelo que é prudente determo-nos com algum pormenor sobre o ponto da situação, no que respeita às potencialidades da Internet. A reflexão proposta pelos autores inicia-se com as limitações da educação tradicional, passando daí para o novo paradigma da escola virtual e as suas consequências no modelo de ensino e aprendizagem, e conclui-se com uma abordagem à importância que devemos dar à tecnologia e com a análise das principais tendências de futuro.
Abstract (EN): Internet access keeps growing exponentially and has implications in a wide variety of areas, among which education is not an exception. Effective communication alternatives and access to information are the two main factors promising to set up a new paradigm in this area, which will shortly outdate classroom-based teaching and learning. This expectation is not however new and has been associated with several technologies since the first quarter of this century, leading us to think twice when assessing the potential of Internet technologies for this purpose. This chapter starts with a summary of the limitations of traditional education, moving on to consider the recent virtual classroom paradigm and its influence in relation to teaching and learning models. To conclude, the role of technology and an analysis of the main trends in this domain are presented.
