Abstract (EN):
This paper describes an experimental study carried out in a large scale direct shear apparatus to evaluate the behaviour of several soil-geosynthetic interfaces. To assess the influence of soil type on soil-geosynthetic interfaces shear strength, two soils with different characteristics were employed: a clean poorly graded sand and a well graded residual soil from granite, typical of northern Portugal. In addition to soil type, other parameters with influence on the interfaces shear strength were analysed, namely, the soil relative density and the geosynthetic type. Therefore, direct shear tests were performed for different values of soil relative density, using two distinct geosynthetics with the same nominal tensile strength: a biaxial woven geogrid and a uniaxial geocomposite reinforcement. For the different interfaces and test conditions, the curves shear stress versus shear displacement are presented and discussed, taking into account the peak and large displacement shear strength of the interfaces. The shear strength envelopes are analysed regarding the interface friction angle and the apparent cohesion. The interface shear strength coefficients are obtained and compared for the different experimental conditions.
