Abstract (EN): Loads evolution knowledge is a basic requirement for adequate operation planning of modern power systems. This requirement is especially valuable in open energy markets, where the requisites on increased reliability and operation efficiency constitute the basic tools for competitiveness. This paper describes the approach developed for consumers¿ characterization on the Portuguese system. This research was developed within the scope of the Project CCR (Characterization of Consumers and Networks), carried out under the framework of a contract with EDP, the Portuguese distribution company, facing the opening of the Spanish/Portuguese electricity market. This paper describes the topic of CCR related to consumers¿ characterization. The knowledge about consumers¿ behavior allows a proper tariff structure design, an enhanced load management and an improved tackle with the distribution infrastructure
