Abstract (EN): This paper presents the e-Mercatura project, which started in 1997, as the first wine e commerce and e-information site in Portugal. The proper conditions required to transfer this idea from a prototype into the actual project only arose in December 2000, through a project focusing on the dissemination of all of the wine information of the Northern region of Portugal in a multi-lingual site (Portuguese, English and French). The basic idea was simple, yet powerful: to have a single entry point for all of the latest information about Northern Portuguese wines, including Port Wine, and wines from the Douro and Vinho Verde Wine Regions. The site, with advanced search features, gives the user access to information on regions, approved designations, winemakers, grape varieties, news, events, brotherhoods, museums, books, curiosities, citations, proverbs, detailed information on rootstocks, glossary, surveys and community forums. The innovative approach lies not only in the completeness of the database, unique in Portugal, but also in the various paths that lead to the information. Due to the enthusiastic feedback from the current partners, we expect to extend the site coverage to all Portuguese wines in the future, and to establish it as the predominant B2B and B2G platform, with some B2C offering.
