Resumo (PT): O rio Varosa apresenta, no seu curso inferior, uma morfologia pouco apta à ocupação humana e à exploração agrícola dos solos. Marcada por vertentes escarpadas e um vale encaixado, este território situado no município de Lamego era já na Época Moderna assinalado por elementos toponímicos e visuais que desenhavam o perfil topofóbico do lugar. No início do século XX, lançaram-se as bases para o aproveitamento do potencial hidráulico do rio Varosa, o que levou a uma progressiva transformação da sua geomorfologia e da paisagem. A projetada linha de caminho-de-ferro da Régua a Vila Franca das Naves contribuiu para a implantação de novos edificados visualmente impactantes, assim como a instalação de indústrias extrativas de pedra e a abertura da autoestrada A24. Se o curso superior tem beneficiado de um projeto patrimonial focado na sua antiga ocupação monástica, a sua secção final espera, ainda, uma reflexão sobre o seu ordenamento e aproveitamento territorial e paisagístico. Compreender esta transformação e refletir sobre papel deste fragmento de território-paisagem associado ao Alto Douro Vinhateiro é o objetivo deste trabalho, que procura uma reconstituição e interpretação diacrónica daquele espaço geográfico e visual a partir de várias fontes.

Abstract (EN): The Varosa river presents, in its lower course, a morphology that is not very suitable for human occupation and for agricultural exploitation. Marked by steep slopes and a steep valley, this territory, located in the municipality of Lamego, was already marked in the Modern Age by toponymy and visual elements that indicated the harsh character of the landscape. At the beginning of the 20th century the foundations were laid for the exploitation of the hydraulic potential of the Varosa river, which led to a progressive transformation of its geomorphology and landscape. The projected Régua to Vila Franca das Naves railway line contributed to the implantation of new buildings with a visual impact, as did the installation of stone extraction industries and the opening of the A24 highway. If the upper course has benefited from a cultural heritage project focused on its former monastic occupation, its final section still awaits reflection. Understanding this transformation and reflecting on the role of this portion or fragment of landscape territory associated with the Alto Douro Wine Region is the aim of this work, which seeks a diachronic reconstitution and interpretation of that geographical and visual space from various sources.
