Resumo (PT): Ao longo da segunda metade do século XIX, o sector do vinho do Porto e a região duriense foram marcados por diversos factores, em particular as doenças da vinha, a nova legislação liberal e as alterações nos mercados, que conduziriam a uma transformação estrutural no sector vitícola português. O alargamento das plantações de vinhedo por todo o país, no último quartel do século XIX, impulsionou o fabrico de falsificações de vinho do Porto. Em consequência, aprofundou-se o antagonismo entre a viticultura duriense e os exportadores, representando duas visões diferentes da mesma questão: de um lado, a defesa da marca regional, do outro a defesa da marca comercial. Assistir-se-ia a um digladiar de grupos de pressão junto do Governo, com os notáveis durienses a multiplicar iniciativas e reivindicações, procurando pressionar o Estado a intervir no sentido da definição e defesa da denominação de origem Porto para os vinhos do Douro

Abstract (EN): In the second half of the 19th century, the Port wine sector and the Douro Wine region were marked by several factors, in particular vine diseases, new liberal legislation and changes in markets, which would lead to a structural transformation in the Portuguese wine sector. The expansion of vineyards throughout the country in the last quarter of the 19th century boosted the Port wine forgery. As a result, there was increasing antagonism between Douro winegrowers and exporters, representing two different visions of the same issue: on the one hand, the defence of the regional brand, and on the other, the defence of the commercial brand. There was a clash of pressure groups lobbying the Government, with the Douro elites multiplying their initiatives and claims in an attempt to put pressure on the State to define and defend the Port appellation of origin for Douro wines.
