Abstract (EN): Recycling of matter is essential to the agroecosystems that support our society, and developing an optimal system to valorize organic wastes, turning them into a sustainable source of agricultural fertilizer, is a pressing concern. However, even the systems utilized in developed countries such as Portugal are deficient, either lacking the capacity to recycle sufficient organic waste or failing to ensure the quality of the resulting compost. This paper focuses on the possibility of waste management companies adopting a system based on domestic sorting of organic waste, analyzing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats associated with such transition. © 2020 Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK.
