Portugal’s Independent Record Stores, 1998–2020Paula Guerra This chapter explores the importance of independent record stores in Portugal. It highlights their relevance as catalysts for specific scenes and sociabilities and examines how they can be understood not only as spaces of consumption but also as places where rituals are enacted, and communities of taste are constituted. Likewise, it will touch on several levels of analysis, such as the emergence of a new economic rationale based on curation and collecting, the vinyl revival, and the stores’ complex relationship with the digital revolution. The methodological approach employed is ethnographic analysis, using direct observation of ten stores and interviews with their owners and customers. Over the last few decades, the music world has changed profoundly. Large companies such as Amazon have appeared, illegal downloads and software have proliferated, and the reality of streaming platforms has become all-pervasive. (...)
