Abstract (EN): Along several stretches of the Portuguese west coast the defence of consolidated urban waterfronts affected by erosion and other sea actions has been realised through groins and sea walls. After several years without maintenance some great repair operations on the coastal defence works of Espinho, Ovar, Ilhavo, Vagos and Figueira da Foz municipalities have been carried on. This paper presents a report on the repair actions. The main modes of the coastal structures damages and failures are identified. The undertaken actions are referred. A need for a comprehensive survey and maintenance is justified. A prevention policy should be adopted to avoid new urban occupation of areas vulnerable to erosion.
