Resumo (PT): Muitos anos antes de Arnaud e Nicole terem acusado Aristóteles de ser arbitrário na sua lista de categorias, os autores da escolástica medieval latina já se preocupavam com este problema e tentavam resolvê-lo através da formulação de uma justificação para a lista aristotélica. Nas suas Disputações Metafísicas, Suárez discute este mesmo problema e cria a sua própria resposta. Neste artigo, pretendo mostrar a estratégia de Suárez – que consiste em perguntar qual é o grau de distinção suficiente para considerar que uma categoria é primariamente diferente de outra – e o modo como lê a tradição escolástica no que diz respeito a este tópico.

Abstract (EN): Many years before Arnaud and Nicole accused Aristotle of being arbitrary in his list of the categories, the medieval Scholastic Latin authors worried about this problem and tried to solve it by supplying different justifications for the Aristotelian list. In his Disputationes Metaphysicae, Suárez discusses the same problem and creates his own answer to it. In this paper, I intend to show Suárez’s strategy, which consists in asking what exact degree of distinction suffices for considering that a category primarily differs from another, as well as the way he reads the Scholastic tradition on this issue.
