Resumo (PT): A importância da formação inicial de professores para uma educação de qualidade é inegável. De facto, a formação docente é por vezes considerada como uma panaceia para os problemas educativos, no entanto frequentemente é alvo de críticas. Esta contradição também é visível em Portugal e a procura de um modelo formativo mais eficaz manifesta-se nas várias iniciativas legisladas ao longo das últimas três décadas. Este artigo descreve a evolução da formação inicial de professores neste país, especialmente no ensino das línguas estrangeiras no secundário, com base na análise documental do seu respectivo enquadra¬mento legal e do trabalho prévio de especialistas reconhecidos, com o objectivo de compreender como se chegou ao actual modelo de formação, destacando os marcos mais significativos em termos da sua organi¬zação, áreas científicas e condições de acesso à carreira docente.

Abstract (EN): The importance of initial teacher education for quality of education is undeniable. Indeed, teacher training is sometimes considered as a panacea for educational problems, even though it is often the target of criticism. This contradiction can also be seen in Portugal, where the search for a more effective training model is reflected in the various initiatives legislated over the last three decades. This article describes the evolution of fo¬reign language initial teacher training in this country, especially in secondary education, based on a documen¬t analysis of its respective legal framework and previous contributions of recognised specialists. The aim is to un¬derstand the current initial teacher training model, highlighting the most significant milestones in terms of its organisation, scientific areas and the conditions of access to the teaching career
