Resumo (PT): Este ensaio pretende salientar a importância de uma distinção central da Ética a Nicómaco entre as virtudes dianoéticas da phronesis e da techne, isto é, entre os campos do agir e do fazer. A tese é de que esta distinção não só se mantém actual, mas é especialmente relevante para se compreender o papel hodierno da inovação tecnológica como a principal força motriz da sociedade em direcção ao futuro. Alasdair MacIntyre e Hans Jonas apresentam uma perspectiva crítica análoga sobre o significado da perda da razão prática face à razão calculadora, mostrando como o quadro epistémico moderno se baseia numa separação estrita entre factos e valores que já não vigora. Filiando-se na perspectiva das virtudes, ambos desenvolvem a distinção aristotélica com o intuito de restaurar um papel colectivo da deliberação que possa fazer face aos desafios éticos levantados pelo progresso moderno da tecnologia e da burocracia.

Abstract (EN): This essay aims at bringing to the foreground a central distinction in the Nicomachean Ethics between the two intellectual virtues of phronesis and techne and hence between the activities concerning doing and making. It is our take that this distinction still holds true for nowadays and is especially relevant for understanding the role of technological innovation as society’s main driver towards the future. Both Alasdair MacIntyre and Hans Jonas present an analogous yet different critical view on the loss of practical reason, showing how the modern epistemological framework builds however on a strict separation of fact and value that no longer holds true. Acknowledging the insights of virtues ethics, both authors develop the previous distinction of Aristotle with the purpose of restoring a much-needed collective role of deliberation due to the challenges presented by the modern driven bureaucratic and technological progress.
